Since 1971, ParticipACTION has helped Canadian kids from coast to coast to embrace physical activity a vital part of their everyday life. As part of their modern mission, this legendary non-profit conducts a national assessment of child and youth physical activity in Canada called the Report Card on Physical Activity for Kids.
In 2022, ParticipACTION's report card gave Canadian kids a D, based on the national average of children and youth meeting the physical activity recommendations the Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Children and Youth. This grade represents a decrease from the previous two years, in part because of the disruption impact of the pandemic.
The Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Children and Youth recommends at least 60 minutes of daily on average.
WAY TOO SEDENTARY
Not surprisingly, the general decline in physical activity correlates with an increase in screen time and sedentary activities for Canadian kids and youth. In fact, the same ParticipACTION report gives Canada an F on this front, explaining that only 18 percent of children and youth met the screen time recommendations from the 24-Hour Movement guidelines in 2022.
The status quo is not working. ParticipACTION's data and conclusions indicate a real and persistent problem in Canadian kids and youth sports that's only getting worse. The country needs a new solution, like 3/P!
work to be done
Among other recommendations, the report spells out some of the biggest solutions:
- Support policymakers and practices with shared principles, strategies, and interventions
- Introduce a variety of sports to children (more sport sampling) versus specialization
- Ensure sport offers include children with disabilities and different ethnic backgrounds
3/p to the rescue
By design, the Player Performance Platform takes on the crisis in youth sports, acting as a new source of neuroscience-based principles, strategies, and interventions for both players and coaches to adopt with confidence. The platform encourages all young athletes to stay in organized sports and to try new activities. And it advances all-important concepts of diversity, inclusivity, and equality as a means to achieve a greater level of team performance.
